Abstract
Despite the increasing number of married or cohabitating women who present with anorexia or bulimia nervosa, the information regarding eating disorders in married patients available from the literature is very scarce, and is mostly based on clinical observations in small patient samples. In an effort to provide more generic information about this issue, the present contribution reviews the current state of research regarding married anorexics and bulimics, in particular about the incidence, clinical characteristics, prognosis, relational characteristics and treatment of these disorders as presented by married subjects. The available data suggest that the clinical characteristics of eating disorders in married women closely resemble those observed in single patients, yet that the disorder may appear more severe, and that a lack of intimacy, often concealed by a superficial overattachment, may be a predominant characteristic of these patients' marriages.
